When Do UPS Batteries Need To Be Replaced?

Determining when a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) battery needs replacement cannot be based solely on its age; a comprehensive assessment considering the battery's actual health and environmental factors is crucial.

 

1. Reference Age

Under ideal conditions, most UPS systems use valve-regulated lead-acid batteries with a designed lifespan of 3 to 5 years. However, this is only a theoretical reference. Actual lifespan varies significantly depending on usage:

Shortened Lifespan: High ambient temperatures, frequent discharges, or poor power grid quality can cause batteries to age rapidly within 2-3 years.

Extended Lifespan: Conversely, in environments with constant temperatures and low discharge rates, battery lifespan can approach 5 years or even longer.

 

2. Pay Attention to Four "Danger Signals"

When a battery exhibits any of the following conditions, it requires immediate replacement to prevent data loss or equipment damage:

A Dramatic Drop in Backup Time

This is the most obvious indicator. For example, if a battery that previously lasted 30 minutes after a power outage now only lasts a few minutes before triggering an alarm and shutting down, it indicates severe capacity degradation.

UPS alarm signal

Modern intelligent UPS systems have self-test functions. When the panel displays messages such as "Replace Battery," "Battery Fault," or "Low Battery Capacity," or emits a continuous, abnormal beeping sound, this is the most direct and serious signal.

Power-on self-test fails

If the UPS emits a rapid alarm sound and displays "Battery Fault" or "Replace Battery" when started with normal mains power, it indicates that the battery is not functioning properly.

Abnormal appearance

Bulging/deformation: This is an extremely dangerous signal, indicating that the battery may be short-circuited or overheated, posing a risk of explosion. It must be stopped immediately and the battery replaced.

Leakage or corrosion: White or green powder (sulfation) appears around the battery terminals, or an unidentified liquid seeps out.

 

3. How to scientifically determine the cause?

For critical equipment requiring high reliability, a more proactive strategy is recommended:

Regular Professional Inspection: Annual professional inspection is advised. Using specialized equipment to measure the battery's internal resistance and actual capacity allows for a scientific and accurate assessment of its health, enabling preventative measures.

Preventative Replacement: For critical business systems such as those in finance, data centers, and healthcare, do not wait until the battery completely fails. It is recommended to strengthen monitoring after 3 years of use and plan for preventative replacement around 4 years later.

Replacement Recommendations

Complete Replacement: For battery packs consisting of multiple batteries connected in series/parallel, it is strongly recommended to replace the entire pack simultaneously. Mixing new and old batteries can lead to uneven charging and discharging, affecting the overall performance of the pack and the lifespan of the new batteries.
